Caltagirone

Calatina ceramics have very ancient origins, from the Neolithic through the centuries and the various dominations,  Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Saracen up to the year 1030 when the Genoese liberated the city, then came the Muslims, who were expelled by Count Roger the Norman, followed by the Swabians and Angevins. It was the Sicilian Vespers that freed all of Sicily from French domination.   Caltagirone,  heart of the Val di Noto,  experienced very prosperous periods. We find traces of all these different influences in the names and decorations, the alleys among the splendid Baroque palaces are in fact called "carrugi" and the decorations and colors of the most refined ceramics are those of the tables and homes of princes and barons

Santo Stefano di Camastra

The blues of the views over the Aeolian Islands are what I love most about the

small town on the border between the province of Messina and that of Palermo. The history of Santo Stefano di Camastra is recent, but no less fascinating for that. It (re)emerged, after a terrible landslide, in 1812 further downstream and with a very particular urban structure: a square divided into four parts with a diamond and two diagonals inside it, as desired by Duke Giuseppe Lanza di Camastra. After the tragedy of destruction, the people of Santo Stefano discovered themselves as ceramists and from the mud created wonderful majolica tiles, and the proximity to the coast allowed them to ship tiles, dishes, jars by sea as well, thus linking the fate of the new town and its artisans.

Artistic Ceramics

perhaps the most ancestral form of craftsmanship, ceramics is among the artistic expressions that define the identity of a place and at the same time has a worldwide presence. Every place has its own ceramics, characterized by colors, techniques, and decorations; listing all the Sicilian ones would be ambitious, so the only criterion for making a selection is guided by emotions. Palermo, Taormina, Sciacca, Caltanissetta, Modica, and many other names of large cities or small villages are no longer just "trademarks" but the places and inspirations that have influenced the ceramists we love to present to you.
